Plate load test

Theory

It is field test to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of soil and the loaded stability of soil under applied load. The test consist of bearing plate of mild steel is subjected to gradual increase of load and the corresponding settlement is to be recorded the ultimate bearing capacity is then taken as the load at which the plate stand sinking at a rapid rate. The bearing plate is square of minimum size 750 mm square plate is used for degree, sandy and gravity soil.

Items required

1.      Sand bags
2.    Wooden platform
3.    Steel plate
4.    Loading column
5.     Steel plate
6.    Wooden hoist bags
7.     Clamp
8.    Dial
9.    Bearing plate

Application

This test is valuable for predicting the statement of cohesive soil and for valuating for the bearing capacity of sandy and gravity soil which are different at to sampled tasted in the undisturbed state and issued lays.

Procedure

1.      Dug pit which should be equal to 5 times the width of bearing plate.

2.    Dug a square hole at the centre of the pit the size of the hole should be equal to some level as the level of actual foundation. The depth of square is calculated from the following relation.
d/B = df/Bf   where d = depth of the hole and B = width of bearing plate
df = depth of foundation
Bf = breadth or width of foundation

3.    Plate the bearing plate in the hole. If the surface of the hole is uneven the spread layer of sand and cement under the base plate.

4.    Construct a verticle columns provided wooden plate form.

5.     Place sand bags over wooden plateform in order to transmit the load bearing plate through the vertical column.
