Do you feel restless or excited
in a yellow coloured space? Do you feel relaxed in blue coloured room? Well
these are frequently asked questions and the answers to these questions are
normally affirmative.
Artists and designers have
always used colours, which make your mood lighter and cheerful. Well, have you
ever thought why they choose a specific colour? There’s a rationale behind it.
There are four psychological primary colors – red, blue, yellow and green. They relate in that order to the body, mind, emotions and the essential balance between these three. The psychologies of the eight basic colours are as follows:
Red
Being the best influential
colour, it has the quality of appearing to be closer than it is and therefore
it grabs our attention. It motivates us and raises the pulse rate, giving the
thought that the time is passing more rapidly than it is. Red is strong and is
a very basic colour. Pure red is the simplest colour, with no nuance. It is
stimulating and lively, very friendly but at the same time, it can be professed
as difficult and violent.
Yellow
A stronger colour like yellow
expressively would lift our state of mind and our self admiration. It is the
colour of poise and hopefulness. Too much of yellow, would lead to a wrong tone
in relation to the other tones in a colour scheme and it can give rise to fear
and anxiety.
Green
This colour strikes the eyes in
such a way as to require no change. Being the centre of the spectrum, green is
the colour of stability, a more significant perception than many people
realize. When the world about us contain ample of green, this indicates the
presence of water, so we are reassured by green, on a primitive level.
Orange
Since it is the mixture of
yellow and red, orange is stimulating and reaction to it is a combination of
the physical and the emotional. It’s focuses our minds on issues of substantial
comfort – food, warmth and shelter. It is the ‘fun’ colour.
Pink
Being a shade of red, pink also
affects us physically, but it soothes rather than stimulates. It is a powerful
and a strong colour. Psychologically it represents feminine principles and
survival of the species. Too much use of pink is actually demanding and can be
somewhat emasculating.
Blue
A primary colour like blue
affects us emotionally, rather than the physical reaction we have to red.
Stronger blues will encourage clear thought, softer blues will serene the mind
and support attentiveness. Consequently it is calm and gentle. It is the colour
of clear communication. Blue colour doesn’t appear to be nearer as the red
colour does. It is found that blue red colour does. It is found that blue is
world’s favourite colour. However, it can be perceived as cold, impassive and
unsociable.
Black
This creates protective
barriers as it absorbs all energy coming towards you, and hides the
personality. It is essentially absence of light, since no wavelengths are
reflected and it can be therefore be ominous since many people are afraid of
dark. Certainly, it communicates absolute clarity. It communicates
sophistication and uncompromising excellence. It creates a perception of
heaviness and genuineness.
White
Just as black is total
absorption, white is total reflection. In effect, it reflects the full force of
the assortment into our eyes. It is often a strain to look at. Visually white
gives a heightened perception of space.
Brown
A combination of red and yellow
with a larger proportion of black, forms colour brown. It has much same
seriousness of black but is warmer and shorter. This colour particularly has
connection with earth and natural world. It is solid, reliable and most people
find it quietly supportive.
While individual shades do make an impact by themselves, interplay of colours can add to the aesthetic appeal with various permutations and combinations.
