In this method, representative sample is drawn from the lot and the decision, whether to accept or reject the lot, is based on the result of that sample. A plan of this type requires three numbers to be specified.

The lot size (or the number of items in the lot) = N

The sample size (the number of sample size) = n

The acceptance number (the number of defective items allowable in the sample) = c

Rejected number = r




No sampling plan can give a complete protection against the acceptance of defective product. Single sampling calls for decision on acceptances or rejection of a lot on the basis of the evidence of one sample from that lot.
