Theory
An instrument which is use for observing staff reading on leveling staff kept over different Station point after creating line of site is called as level. Different in elevation between the point can be work out level essentially consist of following parts
1. Leveling head
2. Limb plate
3. Telescope
4. Bubble tube
5. Tripod
Advantage of dumpy level are
a. Simple
b. Required simple adjustment
c. Adjustment stay for longer period
d. Bearing of line can also be taken

Construction
In this level telescope was rigidly attached to limb plate by means of two supports instrument was so constructed that axis of telescope was perpendicular to vertical axis of the level. Telescope cannot be rotated above its longitudinal axis. Level tube was permanently placed so that its axis lies in same vertical plane as axis of telescope but it was adjustable in altitude by means of cap stand headed screw at one end ray shade cap was provided to protected object glass. A clamp screw and slow motion screw was also provided to control movement of spindle above its vertical axis.
Telescope of dumpy level had magnifying power of 30 diameter of level tube and it has sensitive of level tube of 20 sec of arc per graduation of 2 mm focusing screw was attached in between the support compass was also provided in limb plate for taking bearing if required.
Application
Instrument was use for observing staff reading on leveling staff.
