Feng shui tips to harness health, wealth and good fortune.

Feng shui, the chinese art of placement balances the life-energies or ‘chi’ in a living space, increasing the flow of positive chi (energy) bringing health, wealth and good fortune. The fundamental principles are similar to notions of modern physics; all things contain their own energy; people, structure and plants, all have a life force called chi and it is possible to tap this energy to affect and change our lives.

Based on the philosophy that creating harmony and balance can produce tangible benefits. Feng shui helps enhance your environment and increase its ability to nurture and empower your life and it all begins with your home.

  • The heart of family life. The living room is where you sit back, relax and enjoy. Furniture should be placed in chi areas, within the path of fresh air and under ample lighting. Allow for space, since cramped pathways funnel negative forces. Furniture is best arrangement in a circular, square or octagonal grouping in the middle of the floor to allow for the free flow of chi. Stereo equipment placed on the west wall will bring extra luck to your home.

  • Feng shui dictates the living room should be inviting, relaxed, clutter free and not over-furnished. Soft, rounded sofas and chairs with high backs symbolize support in the lives of family members. Chairs and sofa back should not face the doorway, and there should be an even number of seats in the room. Use a set of nesting tables, and keep the coffee table neat, especially if is in the center of the room. This is a minor health area and should be clutter free to promote well-being.

  • The dining table is the fountain-head of plenty, where the family gathers to eat and meet. The best location for it is the center of the property; where the earth energies are strongest and nearest to the tai chi. The dining table should be placed in the center of the room, to stimulate the flow of chi. Avoid placing it under an overhead beam. The table should be placed under balanced lighting in the center of the room to benefit from good ventilation.

  • It is important to choose comfortable dining chairs, and they should have a back. Dining chairs with a horseshoe shaped back are ideal. If possible, the dining chairs should face-back in the direction of a wall rather than a doorway. Only an even number of chairs should be placed around the table. Large mirrors or portraits of food in the dining area are known to promote abundance.

  • Appropriate table setting reflects subtle energy. Place an octagonal centerpiece or place mats, on the dining table for good feng shui. A bright table decoration creates a focal point, preventing the conversation from splintering. Avoid positioning any handles, knives, etc. where they point directly at your guests. It can subtly create tension. Never use cracked crockery or glasses. It is believed that by offering food or drink in them, you wish the same fate on your guest.
