A Typical Bar Chart Schedule

The Board of Technical Examinations intends to conduct an examination. The result is to be declared within a period of 60 days. This activity can be shown by the following Bar (Gantt) Chart.

First of all, it is necessary to sort out the activities which are independent and interdependent and then to decide the order of their sequence.

S.No.
Activity
Time required
1.
Collection of examination forms and fees
10 days
2.
Setting of question papers
30 days
3.
Distribution of question papers and answer books
5 days
4.
Seating arrangements
5 days
5.
Collection of answer books and assessment work
20 days
6.
Preparation of mark sheets and declaration of result
10 days

In the above example, the activities at serial numbers one and two are independent. Therefore, they can be started independently, at the same time. The activities at serial numbers three and four can also be taken up simultaneously. But the activity at number five is dependent on the activities at serial numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4. It cannot, therefore, be started unless the activities at serial numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 are completed. The time required if it is taken up earlier. Completion of results of the last paper can taken 5 days. Thus, five days can be saved in this way.
