The Architect

Although the functions of an Architect and an Engineer are apparently the same, there is a distinction between their duties, when they are separate entities. An Architect can take up the work of executing the construction work i.e. he can perform the function of both Architect and an Engineer but the converse is not true. An Engineer cannot take up the work of an Architect. When the Architect undertakes the execution the duties he performs are those of an Architect as well as an Engineer. When these two entities are separate, they perform different functions. When the Architect is engaged for Architectural work only, he is expected to perform the following duties.


Duties of an Architect

  • He should first visit the site to survey its location and surroundings.
  • He should ascertain the requirements of the client and guide them in the matters of doubts and obstacles.
  • He should prepare plan of the building which would have attractive appearance and at the same time accommodate the requirements of the client.
  • He should prepare estimate of the proposed building and guide the client how it could be economical.
  • He should get the plans sanctioned from the appropriate authorities.
  • After sanction of the plan he should guide the client for engaging an agency or agencies to execute the work.
  • When the work is in progress, he should visit the site as frequently as possible to ascertain the progress of the work.
  • He should see that the work is being executed according to the sanctioned plan.
  • He should ascertain that the material used in the construction work is of a specified quality.
  • He should see that utmost economy is observed while executing the work and that there is no unnecessary wastage of any kind and certify the bills for payment.
  • He should clear doubts, if any in mind of the engineer and help him to solve his practical difficulties.
  • He should see that the work is progressing according to the expected time schedule.
  • He should maintain all the record about the construction work being executed under his guidance.
  • He should help the client in getting the completion certificate of the project from the appropriate authorities.
  • He should submit the final accounts of the construction work to the client both for verification and final settlements.
