POLYALK WP
POLYALK WP is a novel
waterproofing co-polymer.
It is known that concrete or
mortar by itself has good impermeability, when properly formulated and firmly
laid. In practice there is often a tendency to use extra water for easy
workability and this gets compounded with poor workmanship. Thus the resulting
high ‘water-cement’ ratio and voids content, makes the concrete have large
amount of porosity leading to excessive permeability.
Shrinkage of concrete is
another cause, which tends to generate some cracks. Higher permeabilities and
cracks can provide a continuous passage from one face of the concrete to the
other, resulting in dampness or leakage.
POLYALK WP is the right choice
for water proofing for following reasons.
·
It can be easily mixed with cement, forming an
impermeable co-matrix of cement and polymer, in the form of solid layer. The high
compressive strength property of cementitious matrix is reinforced by high
flexural strength and extraordinary adhesion of polymer.
·
It is alkaline and compatible with concrete.
·
It does not facilitate carbonation.
·
It is amenable for application in moist
conditions for example;
a.
Exteriors, terraces and chajjas in wet spells of
monsoon
b. Underground and/or overhead water tanks almost
immediately after emptying.
· It can mixed with any cement based paint and
thus can have desired shade along with total waterproofing with marginal
increase in cost. This is equivalent or a better option than prevalent acrylic
coatings.
· Can be used as a base water-proofing coat. After
cure, it can receive any cement-based paint (or texturized finish) over it.
Uses
·
Roof slabs – flat or slopings, chajjas, folded
plate roofs, vaulted roofs, domes etc.
·
Flooring, external walls.
·
Flooring, external walls.
·
Sunk portion of bathrooms, toilets, balconies,
etc.
·
Overhead or underground water tanks and other
large reservoirs.
·
Mortars for filling of G.I. or any other
drainage pipes.
·
As an admixture for providing waterproof plaster
to external walls especially in high rise buildings.
·
As waterproof additive to any cement based paints
used as a finishing coat.
Test results
· As per DIN 1048 (Cured concrete cubes, one face
coated with POLYALK WP cement slurry and tested.)

Instructions for use
Preparation of the surface to
be waterproofed is always of utmost importance. Any significant deficiency in
the civil work such as loose or hollow concrete / plaster, exposed
reinforcement steel etc. should be attended to first and required curing should
be done as per the usual norms.
· Cracks other than hairline ones should be
suitably widened, freed from loose particles and then filled with a mortar
consisting of POLYALK EP
· Scrub and clean the surface to free it from any
bitumen, oil, grease, loose flakes or particles.
·
Moisten the surface with water jet one day
before.
· Prepare a slurry using 1 part by weight of POLYALK
WP and fresh white or grey ordinary Portland cement. Use a mix by weight of
1:1.25 for the first coat and 1:1.5 for subsequent coats. The mixing is best
done using a low-speed stirrer, but continuous hand-mixing to a lump free
consistency is also adequate. Apply the slurry by brush to the damp surface. Prepare
only as much slurry as can be used within 30 minutes. Keep the mix continuously
stirred.
· Apply by brush two more coats of similar slurry
at 24 hour intervals and allow to set for 48 hours.
· Cure the coating for 7 days by sprinkling water
thrice a day on the vertical surface (external walls) and by moist gunny bags
on the horizontal surface (terraces).
Coverage
A coverage of approximately
50-55 sq. ft. can be obtained per kg. of POLYALK WP per coat on plain surfaces.
Coverage will vary depending on the nature of the surface.
Precautions
·
Do not add any water.
·
Keep the slurry well stirred.
·
Prepare as much slurry as can be applied in 30
minutes.
·
Do not overwork the coating.
· POLYALK WP is non-toxic. Tests have shown that
there is no harm even when drinking water is exposed to larger concentrations
of the chemical.
· Any accidential spillage or splash on the body
must be immediately washed with plenty of water. Use of protective hand gloves
and goggles is recommended.
· Wash all the implements with soap water. Hardened
deposits can be cleaned mechanically.
