The concept of entrepreneurship
was developed for the first time by French people, more than four centuries
ago. To begin with, they recognised the idea of entrepreneurship as an activity
dealing with military operations or expeditions. Later in the 17th
century, the idea of business ventures was also included in the
entrepreneurship activity.
It is a challenging subject for
the technical people who really work for the economic development of country.
The main purpose of giving such education is to step up the economic
development and to make the country worthy of competition. A student who is
concerned with such a subject must have in his mind a clear idea about the
meaning of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship works as a catalyst in the
economic development. Many research studies have so far been carried out on
this subject. In the course of time French people regarded an entrepreneur as a
person translating profitable ideas into a productive activity. However,
because of tremendous changes in the social, economical and technological
developments in the business activities all over the world, the concept of
entrepreneurship has also undergone radical changes. Those who are bold enough
and possess innovative abilities, zeal and enthusiam can only fit themselves
into such a challenging business environment. The people gifted with such
qualities can be considered as entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship development is a
national mission (objective). Promotion of entrepreneurship among technically
qualified persons is one of the major thurst
areas in industrial development. The endeavour has two fold objectives,
one to achieve technological upgradation and diversification persons into the
field of industrial entrepreneurship and the second to inculcate the spirit of
self-employment in as many educated persons as possible. Self-employment
implies creation of a job for one self by engaging in a gainful economic
activity and utilising one’s creativity, skill or talent for earning livelihood.
A self-employed person is his own master, but then self-enterprise suits only
to those who are painstaking and are capable of exercising initiative and
enthusiasm for meeting the challenges. There is a wide scope for
self-employment both in industry as well as in business.
