question & answer on Extra item , Prime cost, Revised estimate

Give the meaning of the following:

Extra item

Prime cost

Extra item:
While quoting a tender a list of items to be carried out by the contractor is quoted. During execution of the work however, an additional item of execution may arise or the quantity of work for a particular item mentioned in contract may increase above the decided in contract. In both cases, the ‘item’ is referred as extra item and additional charges are required to be paid to the contractor for its execution.

Prime cost:
While preparation of a detailed estimate for any work certain quantities like water supply – sanitary – door – electrical fittings cannot be exactly worked out as they are bound to fluctuation in accordance with the wishes of the owner. Hence, to account for such items a lump-sum amount expressed as some ‘percentage’ of the tendered cost for work is included while inviting a tender and is known as ‘prime cost’.
