POLYALK FIXOPRIME
POLYALK FIXOPRIME is an
elastomeric Polymeric formulation specially designed to protect mild steel or
Tor steel from corrosion. Ideally if conditions around steel are maintained in
high alkaline range preferably in pH range of 11.5 to 13, it is not likely to
corrode. Cement itself being alkaline in nature, provides a permanent
protective medium around the steel. However being brittle, cement has poor
flexural and tensile properties with the result it tends to chip off from the
steel surface on the slightest impact.

- Passivation of exposed steel in repairs to structural members.
- Coating of reinforcement bars in new R.C.C. structures.
- H.T. wires in prestressed concrete pipes.
- Mild steel pipeline.
- Mild steel structures, bridges, arches, etc. especially in marine environment.

Advantages
POLYALK FIXOPRIME is a
single-pack specially formulated polymeric solution, which is fully compatible
with cement. It is the best choice for protection of steel for the following
reasons:
- It is a highly alkaline elastomeric polymer.
- It is a one-pack system.
- It can be mixed with cement easily forming a co-matrix of hydrated cement paste and polymer. The high alkalinity of cement reinforced by high alkalinity, high flexural strength and extra adhesion of polymer gives long term protection to mild steel against corrosion.
- This treatment can be carried out at site, which is particularly useful for repair jobs, as well as for the protection of new steel.
- Occasional retouching can conveniently affected.

Application procedure of
RUSTICIDE confirms to I.S. 9077 – 1979 (reaffirmed – 1997) Appendix B, Clause
5.3.3
- It is observed from the test results that POLYALK FIXOPRIME / cement coated bars do not suffer any bond loss when embedded in concrete. Epoxy coated bars are known to suffer substantial bond loss with concrete.
Instruction for use
- Clean the steel surface of any loosely held rust particles, scales, etc. by a stiff wire-brush.
- Apply a passivating solution of RUSTICIDE by cotton waste swab and after 24 hours remove, by means of a soft paint brush, any scales that have been loosened by RUSTICIDE.
- Prepare a slurry of 1 kg. of POLYALK FIXOPRIME with 1 to 1.25 kg. of fresh cement into lump-free consistency and apply this slurry to the passivated steel surface by a paint brush. Ensure that no area is left uncovered.
- Allow this coat to set for a minimum of six hours (or preferably till next day) and apply a similar second coat of such slurry. Allow this coat also to set.
Precautions
- Do not add any water.
- Prepare as much slurry as can be applied within 30 minutes.
- POLYALK FIXOPRIME is nontoxic. However, any accidental spillage / splash on the body must be washed immediately with plenty of water. Wear protective goggles, gloves etc. while preparing and applying the slurry.
- Wash all implements with soap and water. Hardened deposits should be removed mechanically.
