Hoists:

Hoists are the equipments used for loads, handling them in suspension as well as for placing them at desired locations. Vertical and horizontal movement are involved in this process. many a times, construction includes handling of heavy loads with a fast speed, safety and with utmost economy. For this purpose, different types of equipments have been developed and are available in market.

Hoisting equipment includes the following:
 1.      Rope pulley blocks
 2.    Chain hoists
 3.    Jacks
 4.    Winches


5.     Cranes

Crane is capable of providing three dimensional movement of load in one continuous operation. It is an unavoidable equipment on large construction projects.


Shears Legs:

These are the modified forms of gin poles. Two such poles are lashed together at their tops and the bottoms are opened out making an angle of about 200. The lifting blocks are hung from the point where the poles intersect. They can be assembled at the site. Shear legs may also consist of three legs, fixed together at top end by bolt, when it is erected the lower end of each is spread outwards to form a tripod.


Shear legs are used for laying the pipes into the trenches as also for lifting beams, trusses, etc. the maintenance and erection of legs is quite easy.


Earth Moving Equipements:

There are several equipements which are used for excavating.

Earth moving equipments can broadly be classified into:

Excavators : These machines include :

·        Dipper or power shovel

Shovel family excavators continue to be the giants of excavating machinery, and they are a useful class of earth moving equipments.

Tractor and Tractor Units :

It is a multi-purpose machine. It can be equipped with special rigs used in earth moving work. It is the most important construction equipment.

Scraper :

A scraper is a digging and carrying device which picks up its load through scraping the ground and transports it at the required place.

Grader :

A grader is used for levelling or finishing earth work.

Earth Compactor :



Earth compactor are used to density earth to a particular density. Compaction gives strength and permeability to an earth structure.
